Betrayal Trauma
Layer Assessment

This assessment helps identify which layers of betrayal trauma are most active for you right now — and traces them to the core wound underneath. Select every statement that resonates. There are no right or wrong answers.

Layer 1 of 7
Layer 1
The Surface Event
What happened — the betrayal as you experienced it consciously. Select everything that applies to your situation.
Someone I trusted deeply hurt me in a way I did not see coming
The person who betrayed me was someone I depended on for safety or love
I have experienced repeated betrayals — it feels like a pattern across relationships
The betrayal involved lies, deception, or information being withheld from me
I was betrayed by an institution, organisation, or system I trusted (workplace, family, community, religion)
The betrayal happened in childhood and shaped how I relate to people today
I sometimes wonder if what happened to me counts as betrayal — it is hard to name it
Layer 2
Betrayal Blindness & The Betrayal Bond
How the mind protected itself — often by not seeing what was there, or staying connected to the source of harm.
I stayed in the relationship or situation longer than made sense — even when I knew something was wrong
I found myself defending the person who hurt me, even to myself
I minimised what happened — told myself it was not that bad, or that I was overreacting
I felt more bonded to the person after they hurt me, not less
There was a push-pull dynamic — periods of warmth followed by hurt, over and over
I did not recognise the betrayal while it was happening — only afterwards
Part of me still feels drawn to or misses the person who hurt me
Layer 3
Behavioural Adaptations
How the nervous system learned to survive — the protective behaviours that developed in response to the betrayal.
I work hard to please people and keep the peace, even at my own expense
I have become very self-sufficient — I find it hard to ask for help or rely on others
I am highly attuned to other people's moods and tend to manage or anticipate them
I shut down emotionally when things get too intense — I go numb or check out
I over-explain myself, apologise frequently, or feel responsible for how others feel
I find it hard to say no — and when I do, I feel guilty
I sometimes sabotage good things before they can be taken away
Layer 4
Relational Patterns
How the wound shows up in connection — the ways betrayal shapes how you relate to others now.
I struggle to fully trust people, even when they have given me no reason not to
I keep people at a certain distance — closeness feels both wanted and dangerous
I attract or end up in relationships that repeat the same painful dynamic
I find it hard to believe that someone could love me without an agenda
I test people — sometimes unconsciously — to see if they will hurt me
When someone gets too close, I feel an urge to pull back or push them away
I give a great deal in relationships but find it hard to receive
Layer 5
Somatic Holding
How the body carries the betrayal — the physical and nervous system imprints that remain.
I carry chronic tension in my chest, shoulders, jaw, or stomach
I feel a persistent low-level anxiety that does not always have a clear cause
My body responds to certain situations — like conflict or criticism — before my mind does
I have difficulty feeling safe in my body — relaxing fully feels foreign or unsafe
I notice physical symptoms (fatigue, pain, illness) during or after emotional stress
I sometimes feel disconnected from my body — like I am watching myself from outside
My sleep is disrupted, or I wake with a sense of dread or anxiety without knowing why
Layer 6
Energy System Imprinting
How betrayal contracts the energy centres — the chakra-level imprints that shape your experience from within.
I struggle to feel safe in the world — there is a baseline sense of threat or instability (Root)
I have difficulty receiving pleasure, abundance, or good things without guilt or waiting for it to be taken (Sacral)
My sense of self-worth feels fragile — I doubt my own perceptions and judgment (Solar Plexus)
Loving and being loved feels complicated — there is grief or guardedness in my heart (Heart)
I find it hard to speak my truth or ask for what I need — my voice feels silenced (Throat)
I question my intuition — I no longer trust what I sense or perceive (Third Eye)
Something in me feels cut off from a larger sense of meaning, support, or divine connection (Crown)
Layer 7
Spiritual Disconnection
The deepest root — the ways betrayal severed the felt sense of divine support, meaning, and belonging in the universe.
I have lost faith — in people, in the universe, or in something larger than myself
There is a loneliness underneath everything that does not go away even with people around me
Life feels like something I have to manage and survive, rather than something I am held within
I struggle to feel that I belong — anywhere, to anything, or to anyone
Part of me has given up on the idea that things can really change at the deepest level
I question whether I am truly worthy of love — real, unconditional, lasting love
Something that used to feel sacred or meaningful in my life no longer feels accessible
